Grades 5 through 8 are developing the foundation of learning to read music notation. Here are the ways in which we develop our sight reading skills:
1) echoing of melodic patterns such as: sol-mi-sol, do-re-mi, la-ti-do, mi-fa-mi, do-do-re 2) performing hand signs for each note of the scale. 3) playing "Forbidden Pattern" - students echo back all patterns except for a specified pattern of the day. If students can remember to audiate (hear pattern in their head/not sing out loud) three times, they win the game. 4) playing "Follow The Hand" - Students decode melodic patterns from the teacher's hand signs. Students sing and sign what they see. 5) Students differentiate half steps and whole steps through hand placement and tuning of intervals. 6) Students transfer their solfegge skills to the skill of reading and performing from musical notation.
